James G. Martin, son of Rev. Arthur Morrison Martin and Mary Grubbs Martin, was born in Savannah, Ga., 11 December 1935. In 1960 he received his Ph.D. in chemistry from Princeton University. From 1966 to 1972, Martin served on the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners, serving as chair, 1967-1971. In 1968, he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention. The North Carolina Greenways Advisory Panel was commissioned by Secretary William W. Cobey, Jr. in January 1991 at the request of Governor James G. Martin in response to the resolution passed by the Third Annual Greenways Conference in 1990.
